My entire career has been spent in events and marketing. UnCommon Markets has been a dream inside my head for several years. It’s the culmination of many different parts of my life. I’m a Market Maker and have done it all – large and small events in every major city in the U.S. From high-end art fairs and one-of-a-kind craft shows to the nation’s largest gift & decorative accessories markets, I’ve helped to create many of the nation’s most successful markets.
My creation of UnCommon Markets is inspired by emerging artists and my love for Scottsdale. This is an opportunity to build a marketplace that supports local artists and businesses, create a fun new experience, and finally, at long last, become an entrepreneur doing something that I love.
“Joan has invaluable experience building successful shows from the ground up. This was demonstrated by her role in the launch of the One of a Kind Show & Sale in Chicago which now hosts hundreds of artists and over 70,000 attendees.
“With a keen eye for fresh, new talent, Joan knows who will do well in her shows and is able to guide artists down a path of success. Through truly listening to the needs of her vendors, Joan develops long term relationships and partners from day one. If I were an artist searching for new opportunity, I would jump on the chance to exhibit with Joan and feel confident and excited about what lies ahead. “
Kathleen Hogan, Show Director, One of a Kind Show & Sale
“Joan has the unique ability to manage large, expansive events with a keen eye for details. She can quickly and effectively identify unique goals and needs for her events while executing them with grace and ease. Not only is Joan a consummate professional with great experience, but also her warmth and infectious personality make her a joy to work with!”
Donna Davies, Vice President of Art Group, Fair Director SOFA CHICAGO, Urban Expositions
For almost a decade, I had the good fortune of working for Joan Ulrich and learning from her how to successfully market and produce major shows and events. One of the overriding ideas she instilled in me was that our exhibitors or vendors must be our true partners and everything we do—from the audience we attract to the experience we create— must relate back to them reaching their goals.”
Lisa Simonian, VP of Marketing, Consumer and Trade Shows, The Mart
“Joan’s emphasis has always been giving exhibitors the best chance to succeed. She understands that being an artist has unique struggles and perks. But, most importantly, she sees the influence and value of handmade product in today’s retail world.
“Through Uncommon Markets, Joan is giving artists a chance to meet the consumers face to face and sell their products in a fun and inviting atmosphere. In turn, she is giving consumers a chance to touch the product, to have a conversation about how it was created, and to make memories surrounding all the treasures they find!”
